I have finished the whole German course on Duolingo and it was a mediocre experience for me. The level that you reach is not impressive, you will learn something but I believe there are better, more efficient ways to spend your time on a language.

I know when I have learned a word because I noticed myself identitying it in several contexts. Most of the time it happens naturally, first with reading it and later in listening content. It is a nice feeling, it makes me feel I am learning. When I become advance and my base knowledge of the language is large, I start learning less unless it is specialist language, at that point I know I am fluent in that language. I am a Spanish native, fluent in English, advance in Italian and French begginer. I use lingQ, duolingo, linkpie, helloTalk, preplay, Netflix, audible, podcast and any other form of content that I can access. I enjoyed learning and teaching languages. And I like to listen Steve talking about language acquisition.😊

Thank you very much for a brilliant video. I turned 66 a week ago. 3.5 months ago, I started learning Chinese Mandarin, and I'm about to finish HSK2. My two native languages are Russian and Ukrainian, and I learnt English as a foreign language at school. I was passionate about English and made it my life profession. At university, I learnt German and Latin. Later in life, I was exposed to Italian, Spanish, Korean, Polish, and Hindu, as well as two native languages of Zimbabwe - Shona and Ndebele. And now, at the age of 66, Chinese Mandarin. I believe and speak from personal experience that age is nothing but a number, especially when it comes to learning languages. Passion, desire and curiosity - is all that is needed and available time will appear like magic. At the age of 26, I used to teach Russian to native English speakers. One of my students was a 77-year-old lady who was the most diligent student.

Duolingo is the gate to the hell of learning a language I personally use Duolingo for about 4month to learn Japanese, it's a great way to teach you about Hiragana and Katakana in general But Duolingo is not perfect, it teaches you broken pronounciation, since all their audio are computer generated so i wouldn't recomend to use Duolingo And some vocab or sentences that UNNATURAL, doesn't make sense or no real life usage, like for example i got a sentences in Japanese "I cut my hand with a knife" like who use that sentences in real life lol In conclusion, Duolingo teaches you that learning a new language is fun for beginner. But not geared towards medium and advanced learner

Arabic is not hard. It’s structured. ALL Arabic words are derived from the root verb (simple past tense) For example: طار Tar means to Fly طير Tayr means a bird طيار Tayyar means Pilot طيارة Tayyarah means aeroplane طيران Tayaran means flying So it’s relatively easy to build a vocabulary Grammar is also structured and if you like math you will easily pick up Arabic grammar. Most learners struggle with learning to write and read the text because they are not used to the alphabet and how letters connect or do not connect. So it’s easier to speak Arabic than read it and write it

Duolingo is a game. That's the problem. All language "teaching" only comes second there and then it's drip fed via multiple-choice, which basically makes it easier to be correct. That merely motivates people to do more Duolingo instead of learning the language outside of it and I think that's a problem. Because people will automatically be pushed back to Duolingo when they try to use the language outside of it, as they might think they don't understand enough and judge this as a "I need to learn more first! I can manage Duolingo quizzes after all!" Sure. You can pick up a few words there. It's hard not do when you understand messages in a language. But it's so extremely inefficient that you are better off using other resources. Because even if you only have 5 to 15 minutes a day - in which case you would need to be honest to yourself and accept that you probably won't get very far with learning even if you keep at it for a few years - you could simply use those 15 minutes to read a simple book in the language you are learning instead or do Anki to learn some previously mined vocabulary with cards which can include sound and pictures. The major takeaway here is merely that Duolingo doesn't actively hurt your endeavour to learn a language (unless it's something which is way different from your mother tongue). But it also doesn't really help you noticably. It just wastes time for a small endorphine rush. And if I want that I might play a real game instead.

I was about 12 when I read a book on how Heinrich Schliemann, the discoverer of Troy, learned languages. He was kind of a language maniac (for his time), having learned some twelve languages or so, and what distinguished him from other "polyglots" at the time is the fact that he would not just speak, but also write in those languages. His method, long before Stephen Krashen's comprehensible input gift to the world, was something that can only be called... hum, comprehensible input, I guess. What he did was using a book, mostly novels, along with its translation, and compare each sentence, word or phrase in each language in order to understand the language he was learning. He would then hire someone to check his pronunciation while he was reading the book aloud in that language. Except for the hiring of a native speaker and reading to him or her, relying instead on records, then cassettes and minidiscs and today, on audio recordings from the internet, that's what I've been doing since then, all the while following, more or less instinctively, all the good advice I heard in today's video. I never studied grammar per se, as I felt there is no way you can "assemble" words in a given order to give them the intended meaning by relying on rules of grammar. First, learning grammar won't help you acquire a single word in your new language. Second, simply moving a given word to a different position, in a string of words, may completely change the meaning of what you're trying to say, yet often, such changes in word order are all grammatically correct. How then can you rely on grammar to ''learn" a new language? I sometimes had doubts before as to whether what I was doing was the best way possible to learn, but I have doubts no more.

Going up to level 3 of Duolingo alone helped me understand most french. The problem with Duolingo (among some of the things mentioned, such as it being too slow) is that it's a great source for SOME languages and not many. Hindi and Turkey are probably not THE BEST languages to learn on Duolingo. They don't seem to have detailed grammar explanations as a language like French does. The French course has great grammatical concepts and detailed explanations. And yes, you have to use other things besides Duolingo. I can't say i am fluent, but it has helped me understand a lot of what i watch on youtube. I dont practice speaking it much so i cant comment on that.
